Recreation CONNECTION One on One with Jason Rogers Jason Rogers,a Norcross native, joined the Duluth Parks and Recreation team ten years ago as a camp counselor. After obtaining a Human Services degree at Shorter College, he now works as the Recreation Manager, a position that perfectly fits his sports-enthusiast personality. What is a “recreation manager”? This position is responsible for community collaboration, planning, coordinating, supervising and admin-istrating recreation activities, events, and programs in a Recreation Center setting; including instructional programs, public service programs, community special events, clinics, and camps. How/Why did you choose to work for the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation? During my first year of college someone told me about this great place called Bunten Road Park. They said that the environment was so positive and that they were hiring summer camp counselors. Well, ten years later I am still here and enjoy that same environment that was here ten years ago. What do you like about this position? I like the interaction with the community, the instructors, and being able to utilize my talents. I enjoy the interaction with the senior citizens in assisting Gwinnett County with the annual senior games and the City weekly badminton activities at Bunten Road Park. The implementation of the new City Active net software has enabled me to enhance customer service and improve department com-munication with program information. What do you like to do when you are not “recreating’ at work? I love to play tennis, sail on my boat, jog, chase my cat, and keep up with my wife. What are some of the challenges? Coordinating and implementing a variety of community programs and activities for a growing diverse population. I strive to offer pro-grams that are of interest to the community as well as the latest programming trends. I am constantly researching for unique programs of community interest such as, Zumba, 3D animation, and our non-competitive soccer program. What contribution are you most proud of over the course of your work with City of Duluth Parks & Rec? Developing the department into a full service department that enhances the recreational opportunities not offered by the county. What do you foresee in the future for the Parks and Recreation Department? As the City develops the park system from the master plans, I foresee developing activities for river use, shuffleboard tournaments, outdoor volleyball programs, etc…….. all of this made possible through the SPLOST funding. City Resident Discount The cost of supplying the programs and services of City of Duluth Parks and Recreation are paid for primarily with city tax dollars. Therefore, persons residing within the city limits of Duluth on property taxed by the City will receive a discount on programs offered by City of Duluth Parks and Recreation which require registration at the cost of more than $5. The amount of the discount can be found in each class description. resIdent denotes fees for those who live within the City Limits of Duluth. non-resIdent denotes fees for those who live outside the City Limits of Duluth. Am I a Resident? A resident is any person who lives within the City Limits of Duluth. This is not to be confused with school attendance. City and School District boundaries are not the same. Even though your mailing address is Duluth, this does not necessarily mean you are a City resident. If you are unsure, Park staff has a city limit street listing. Most programs/classes have different fees for residents and non-residents. Non-residents must pay an additional surcharge established by the Park and Recreation Board. More than half of the participants in many of our programs live outside the City of Duluth and the cost of supplying these programs comes exclusively from City taxpayers; fairness requires that non-City residents share the burden of expense. The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Agency reserves the right to remove anyone falsifying information from our programs. Please call our office at 770-814-6981 if you have any questions regarding residency. 22
